So, you've booked a summer vacation at work, but you're actually staying around? Many people can be taken aback upon haring that someone is going to have a staycation. They go like, "Good for you!", but in their mind they're like, Is that because you can't afford anything else?
Let me tell you, vacation does not necessarily mean you have to go somewhere fancy. Or to go anywhere at all! As for me, it was what I specifically decided to do. Often staycation can be even more beneficial than catching a plane to the Bahamas! It really helps you reconnect with yourself and catch up on things you've never had time for.
So here are 12 really cool things you can do on a staycation that allow you to make the most of your time off.
- Wander around at farmers markets.
Find things that you had no idea were out there. I came across fresh milk yogurt, and it has been life-changing. Have no desire to reach for the remaining Danone jars I have in my fridge!
- Buy fresh local products and make your food.
Even if it's one of your regular meals, it will taste and feel so much more different when made of locally-grown or even organic products! I know this one kind of has to do with the placebo effect, but don't you agree that even the slightest change in routine can be so refreshing? And I mean, some of the vendors might offer you a good old PAPER BAG. Instagram, here I come :)
- Visit local events, like art fairs and street festivals.
Even if you're not much of an art lover, at least you might enjoy the location! I went to a local art fest that took place in the very center of the city, near the pool and the fountains (see above). The weather was dreamy, and it was awesome. I took one of the most cliche' pictures one can take in Toronto, and I'm not even sorry :) Which brings us to the next one...
- Feel like a tourist and take some of those cliche pictures you've been seeing all over Instagram and been rolling your eyes at.
Chances are, you've never visited some of those landmarks and haven't taken any pictures because you thought it was silly. Hey, now is the time!
- Get back to creative activities you've been postponing.
Photography, writing, yoga, you name it. Here I am, blogging again!
- Get some tan on this body!
And by the way, you don't have to go to the beach for that. I don't know how about your city/town, but in Toronto people sunbath literally everywhere. Trinity Bellwoods Park is a local favorite (spot Troian Bellisario if you're lucky!). I myself found a cute little spot in a local parkette - couldn't be happier.
- Give your skin and hair some much-needed love.
Sometimes, when we're too busy with work, our body care goes out of the window. And we don't feel as good due to that just as much as we don't due to being physically tired. Change that!
- Meet up with friends you haven't seen in a while.
I went out with a girl that used to work with me, and we ended up having a very nice evening at the waterfront over some white wine sangria. Make memories!
- Go to a conservation area or a park outside of the city.
For Ontario/Quebec/British Columbia people who don't own a car, there's an awesome service called Parkbus that takes you to various hiking destinations for as low as $50 per person for a round trip!
- Do a clean-up. And then enjoy the wonderful feeling of contentment!
- Hunt end-of-season sales for treasures.
When the sale is coming to an end, the prices are usually the lowest, and you can find rare items that came in returns or in leftovers from the warehouse. And this is how you might come across really cool stuff! And since you're on vacation, you can go to stores at the opening time and shop in peace, when everything is still in place. I found the cutest Topshop leather slides for just $18!
It would've been too easy to put it as number one, but the last is not the least! After you've done with everything else, just relax. Catch up on the video games. Sleep in till noon. Get lost in your favorite book. Spend time with your partner. Just be!
See? Staying around in summer is not at all boring! You can go to the Bahamas next time. Now... Enjoy your time off and have fun! <3
