Hello there! How are you? I'm good. Made myself a fruit plate for breakfast and the creamiest, dreamiest coconut latte with the leftovers of canned coconut milk. I've never thought that canned coconut milk makes such creamy, foamy goodness! I need to make it more often from now on.
Look at these beautiful white roses on my table! I guess that is why I like roses; their message is always so powerful, and they are so delicate, gracious and so, so beautiful.
So, tell me, does it really feel different when you become a year older? My answer would be, I guess it does, but only with time. Right after your birthday, nothing really changes in how you feel!
I'm talking about all this because I turned 26 on Tuesday, so naturally, here's a little report on how it all went! My white roses are my birthday flowers, and the leftovers of coconut milk are from making a birthday cake. But let's start from the beginning!
I was talking about getting out of town for my birthday, before, but we had a change of plans. First of all, we realized that two days off work that I had would not be enough to get there, get some rest and get back. So we decided to save up a bit more and maybe book a week off later. Another reason was that if we'd booked now, we'd have to cancel anyway, because I got sick right before my birthday, caught some kind of cold/flu thing; chills, fever, cough, running nose included. Dream!
It didn't really stop me from having a great time on Tuesday. Tuesday has showed me that you don't always have to invite lots of people or go fancy places to make the prettiest memories. Or to take the most instagrammable snaps! On Tuesday, my European friend came over, and I took her out for lunch at a local place where I went for a GIANT salad bowl and she chose veggie poutine (#goveggies). She got me the Happy Plugs that I had asked for, some beautiful European beauty goodies and a wonderful card just like she always does. Her boyfriend surprised me with a Sephora gift card. So sweet of him, even though he absolutely didn't have to! So I got him a thank you card and this one, which is the best cake I could think of from my local coffee shop. I was told he loved it!
After lunch, me and my friend spent some time just walking around and talking. You know, it always feels like you don't have enough time when it comes to friends who visit from abroad. Real life communication always feels different from FaceTime even if it's a real good friend you're seeing; you need time to get comfortable before you both really start talking, and sometimes by that time you already have to say bye. Oh well... Maybe next time? Next time is has to be, since she left the country yesterday evening. On the bright side, even though I didn't feel 100% well, I couldn't miss the opportunity of taking birthday photos (who would?!). She managed to take such happy photos of me that you wouldn't even tell I was sick. But I didn't have a reason not to laugh that day! The weather was nice, I finally had just had a healthy meal, my friend was there, and besides, I really wanted to capture my new wonderful white overall. I think I'm really falling for overalls, it's the comfiest and the most effortless way to create a casual chic day outfit. Also, turns out ripped white denim is perfect for a hot day!
In the evening, after my friend was picked up by her Canadian sweetheart, my boyfriend got me those beautiful white roses that I mentioned and also made me a birthday cake. He made two layers with coconut cream and fresh strawberries in between, and I decorated it with the remaining berries. This basic recipe for a vanilla cake I found online turned out into something truly wonderful, and I couldn't get enough! It was so moist, delicate and truly European, like something you'd be able to order somewhere in Paris. Even the strawberries I picked up were perfect, naturally sweet this time, so everything was in place. Yay to homemade pastry! You can't buy cakes like this in a supermarket. We stayed in, watched Sleepless in Seattle and shared the last pint of cider that nice people were giving away at the festival last weekend. It was a truly happy day.
Now I'm sitting here looking at my beautiful flowers, smiling at my photos and sipping on the dreamiest latte. I still have a few days to spend at home in bed, recovering, so that's my plans for today. This and a little book-hunting trip to Salvation Army around the corner because girl's gotta put her phone down at some point. And the latest Nancy Drew game (yes it's 26 that I am! I'm not lying). As for the rest of the week, I promised to take my boyfriend our for lunch for all his efforts on my birthday, so maybe Saturday will be the day. And I still have a few more snaps from other days of the week that are not related to my birthday, so another post coming. If the internet improves, because today's connection is worse than ever...
Let's have a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful year! <3
